About the event

Physicians for Social Responsibility Pennsylvania and The Harrisburg Peace Garden Association requests the honor of your presence at The Peace Garden Gala on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at the West Shore Country Club, Camp Hill with speaker John Reuwer, MD.

The gala will begin at 6:00 with a cash bar, and 6:00 Cash bar, with dinner to follow at 7:00.

“Peacemaking in an age of endless war: where do we go from here?”

It’s time to gather once again in support of the Harrisburg Peace Garden, a mission in service of health and peace at both the global and community levels. As always, we offer you the opportunity to join together for an evening of fellowship, conversation, good food, and a chance to consider how best to pursue the path of peace in a fraught world.

Dr. John Reuwer, a retired emergency physician and Adjunct Professor of Nonviolent Conflict Resolution at St. Michael’s College in Vermont, is our featured speaker this year. He has a long-standing passion for freeing the world of violence and nuclear weapons.

The evening’s proceeds will help support the Harrisburg Peace Garden Association. Its mission is to support the garden founded in 1990 by what was then the Harrisburg-Hershey chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility. The garden, which stretches for nearly half a mile on the banks of the scenic Susquehanna River, is maintained by the Association in concert with the City of Harrisburg and in partnership with the Rotary Club of Harrisburg. Here we plant flowers, trees, and ideas of peace, justice, health, and harmony with our planet.

The PSR PA Peace Garden Gala is a fund-raising event to support both the general mission of PSR PA and the development and maintenance of the Peace Garden.

Kindly RSVP by October 1, as there is a $10 fee for late reservations.

About our speaker, John Reuwer, MD

Intentional violence, in our foreign policy, in our streets, and even in our schools, saps our resources and energy from dealing with multiple existential threats to human wellbeing. Dr. Reuwer will share insights gathered from his career in emergency medicine and his 40-year search for alternatives to the violence he encountered in his practice and work in conflict zones. He will focus on war and nuclear weapons as thepinnacle of our faith in violence, and suggest ways that

we can work to turn the tide from war to peace.

Dr. Reuwer has served on volunteer unarmed peace teams in Haiti, Guatemala, Colombia, Palestine/Israel, and several U.S. inner cities. He was deployed as an International Protection Officer with the Nonviolent Peaceforce in South Sudan, one of the world’s largest organizations advancing the field of professional unarmed civilian protection.

A retired emergency physician and former adjunct professor of conflict resolution at St. Michael’s College in Vermont, he teaches courses on conflict resolution, nonviolent communication, and nonviolent action. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of World BEYOND War, and the Committee to Abolish Nuclear Weapons for Physicians for Social

Responsibility Pennsylvania.
