On October 8th, 2026, I attended a unique art opening at SOHO Photo Gallery in New York City. Photographer Margery Schab unveiled her exhibit, Fracking America: Portrait of a Rural Pennsylvania County. Margery has spent years documenting the interaction between the deep rural historical roots of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania and the hydraulic fracturing boom that forever changed the county.

Her photographs include drilling rigs, abandoned churches, glorious pastures, smiling children, and proud family bakers. Margery encourages her audience to understand that the communities that were sacrificed to the energy industry were not empty places waiting to be consumed. These were—and are—towns with a rich culture and children striving for a brighter future—just like their urban and suburban counterparts. SOHO Photo Gallery is located at 539 W 23rd St, New York, NY 10011. The exhibit will be open until November 1, 2026.
